Your identity is most effectively seen in relief. - Tim Rallins
Human skin is composed of three layers, each complicated and responsive to serve their function. Similarly, the human personality has enumerable layers of behavior that can be predicted but are inherently impulsive by response. An individual’s personality and their environment dialectically shift in response to each other. Though different social contexts evoke different facets of an individual this does not primarily characterize a fractured self. The self is divulged most completely in a variety of circumstances.
Albert Bandura developed a Social Cognitive Theory in 1986 emphasizing the interaction of persons and their situations. For Bandura, there is no single proven formula for the individuals’ personality; rather there is a sympathetic relationship of influence. Formulas and rules aid psychologists and artists alike in process but if implemented unconditionally develop into obstructions that deny organic adaptability. Bandura’s Reciprocal Determinism described the interaction of cognition, environmental events and our personal behavior that are believed to form the human experience. Much like the actual Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 test, my studies are constantly being tailored and considered in context to their specific settings to produce an informative response. In each work a personality of lines are mapped out and then tested on varying forms for significant response to study and discuss process on various levels.
Through a process-oriented practice, my work employs formal structure to conceptualize identity in a responsive context. Geometric forms and patterns present a matrix for a systematic coherent arrangement of parts that signify a whole. The melted wax is layered onto the form relating to a corporeal manifestation of the geometric forms. Each layer is treated as though it is the epidermis and groomed with a razor blade to prepare a smooth surface for the ensuing layer. The process of refining and layering of the materials and physical form are evident and preserved in the wax; a documentation of their creation and growth. This allows connotation to flesh with structural forms otherwise deemed cold and aloof of any human association. The individual layers provide different levels of response from the surface to the line and the line to the surface, each directly affecting the other.
